Upgrading the interchange at Clearbrook Road and Highway 1, along with the McCallum Road interchange, comprise some of the City of Abbotsford’s highest transportation priorities.
This project will improve safety, accommodate higher traffic volumes today and in the future, and provide better access to Abbotsford’s industrial and agricultural employment centres, public institutions, key community amenities and other local destinations.
The upgrade plans include more lanes over Highway 1, improved off-ramps on both sides of the highway and changes to the traffic pattern to ensure that peak volume traffic does not back up onto the highway.
New bike lanes and sidewalks will also be included in the plans to make the interchange attractive for all makes of transportation.
Total project cost is estimated at $25 million, cost-shared by the City of Abbotsford, Government of British Columbia and the Government of Canada.
To ensure timely completion of the project (Spring 2011) and to reduce traffic impacts, some night work with heavy equipment will be required. A Construction Noise Variance Permit has been issued by the City.
Preliminary construction activities began in the spring, using day labour. PCL Contractors Westcoast Inc were awarded the construction tender for the majority of the work, and began work on site July 19, 2010. Hours of work are 7:00am-6:00pm, Monday through Saturday.
*NEW* CONSTRUCTION UPDATE (August 30, 2010):
Minor delays can be expected on Clearbrook Road until further notice.
Please obey posted speed limits and traffic control personnel, and watch for workers. Remember in construction zones to "Obey the Sign or Pay Double the Fine".
